About Carlo Nardozza

Carlo Nardozza (1982) is the youngest son of two from a warm Italian family in Genk (Belgium). Since the age of seven Carlo has been fascinated by the trumpet and took his first steps in music inspired by his musical father.

He graduated cum laude for trumpet at Conservatorium Maastricht under supervision of Rob Bruynen and later on studied for his Masterdegree at the same institute under supervision of Claudius Valk and Bert Joris.

During his study Carlo Nardozza founded his own Quintet and started composing for this Quintet, mostly inspired by worldmusic. This Carlo Nardozza Quintet recorded two CD’s, “Making Choices” and “Winterslag”, toured with Jazzlab through Flanders, and also through Romania, Italy and France. They won multiple prices at the Young Jazztalent Concours Gent (Belgium), best composition price at the Tremplin Jazz Concours in Avignon (France), and the Jerry van Rooyen Award (Netherlands).

Also in Maastricht Carlo met the Luxembourg drummer Jeff Herr with whom he created the Jeff Herr Corporation (fusion-space funk). In the meantime they recorded two CD’s and toured through many locations in Europe.

Carlo Nardozza used to be a member of different musical companies. One of them was the Henri Texier Red Route Quintet with whom he worked for three years, another project was the European Jazz Trumpets which used to be a trumpet collective led by trumpet player Pierre Drevet. Carlo also participated in the Orchestre National Jazz Luxemburg with whom he made around two recordings among George Duke.

Until now he also played with Rebirth Collective, OTO - machine and The Muze Jazz Orchestra.

Currently he is engaged in several musical projects which he founded together with some colleague musicians, including Duology (duo with the double bass player Christophe Devisscher, Album “Duology” released in 2015), 11 (duo with composer and pianist Michel Bisceglia, Album “11” released in 2013),  The Carlo Nardozza Quartet, and The Delirium Quintet (among trumpet player Nico Schepers).

Together with pianist Alano Gruarin and guitar player Tim Finoulst, Carlo founded a new project last year named In Bocca al Lupo. For this trio Carlo made arrangements of great Italian classics, without questioning played by the heart because of his Italian roots.

Besides these projects he is a member of the Johannes Müllers Jazz Mile, the Jelle Van Giel Group and the Bram Weijters Quartet.

Carlo is starting a new project “Big Band Nardozza” where he will be accompanied by different Big Bands in Europe. Several great and respected composers (Bert Joris, Lieven Cambré, Lode Mertens and others) are arranging Carlo’s own compositions for Big Band, beautifull music is coming our way!

Carlo as a freelancer already worked with Bert Joris, Philip Catherine, Paul Michiels, Clouseau, Lee Konitz, Dado Moroni, Rosenberg Trio, Bobby Shew, Henri Texier, George Duke, Bruno Castelluci, Brussels Jazz Orchestra and many others.

As Professor in Music and trumpet Carlo has been teaching at the Conservatorium of Gent and the Conservatorium of Brussels. Currently he is teaching at the Conservatorium of Maastricht and at the Academy of Music Hasselt.
